“Participation Trophies” are not creating pansies!

This post is my opinion:

  1. If you disagree, well that’s what an opinion is and you are welcome to yours.
  2. If you are offended, well “Fuck you!” cause it’s my opinion and “FU!”

I was talking to a friend a few months ago and the topic of “Participation trophies” came up. At the time my views on it were that by doing this we are creating a generation that does not know how to lose at a young age and thus we are raising and bunch of “crybabies”.  After the conversation, we laughed about the younger generation (Millennials) and went back to work.

It was not until after the election that I realized how wrong I really was. I was not happy with the election results but like many of my generation, I graciously accepted the loss and starting crafting my plans on how I was going to go try to get more involved and get out there in 4 years, cast my vote and hope that this time the Electoral College agrees with me and my candidate wins. If not then, well there is another 4 years to plan. So that was my master plan.

When I turned the TV on I saw that there were people, mostly young people, out in the streets protesting the outcome of the elections. They were not taking the loss sitting down; they were getting up and yelling about it. I realized that these were the kids with the “Participation trophies” and that didn’t know how to lose and that made them awesome. They were not just going to vote 4 years and get out there and vote again, but rather they were going to take to the streets and social media and let the world know that they are not happy with the results of the elections. I mean this is an important time for the world and I would rather have the future angry when they see something they don’t like then just sit there and wait it out.

For all those that think the Millennials are just a group and lazy “crybabies”, here are a few example of what this generation can do:

  • Malala Yousafzai , educational activist who stood up to radical terrorists when she 15 years old.
  • Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook
  • Ben Silbermann and Evan Sharp, co-founders of Pinterest
  • Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, cofounders of Instagram
  • Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, cofounders of Dropbox
  • Aaron Levie, founder of Box
  • Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb
  • Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy, cofounders of Snapchat
  • Dustin Moskovitz, cofounder of Facebook and CEO of Asana
  • Jessica Alba, actress turned entrepreneur
  • John Zimmer, cofounder and President of Lyft
  • Sean Rad, CEO and cofounder of Tinder
  • Matt Salzberg, CEO and cofounder of Blue Apron

I am sorry, tell me again how Millennials are lazy and “Participation trophies” are hurting a generation?

2016 will be the year of the parent/kid power struggle. From Brexit to the U.S. Elections I saw that while the older generation wants a closed off and hate filled world, while the younger generation wants open borders and love.

To the Millennials, the generation that does not know how to lose,  I say “good for you”. It is better to not know how to lose then it is to accept losing graciously. It is better to protest in the streets then go just go home and wait for the next competition. Let the world know how much you disagree with the direction that the world is taking and you will work hard to fix it. But, make sure you do more than just yell. Make sure you have a plan on how you are going to shape the world.

To the older generations, I say STFU. In the words of John Cena “Your time is up, their time is now.”

Happy Thanksgiving!
